Ophthalmology at Bányai Augenheilkunde!

Ophthalmology, as the name suggests, deals with eye diseases and corresponding healing methods of the eye. Knowledge of certain diseases dates back thousands of years, but it took a long time to create ways to alleviate or eliminate them.

In today’s age, the elimination of a defective vision or eye disease can usually be done with a simple procedure. Laser technology can correct one eye within a few minutes. But what is a small thing today was unthinkable a few years ago.

Our years of experience in ophthalmology, combined with the most advanced technology, allows us to treat all types of refractive errors and eye diseases.

What are the most common eye diseases and functional disorders?

Anyone can be or become nearsighted or farsighted. However, the frequency of diseases and functional disorders of the eyes is age-dependent. A cataract or glaucoma is more likely in older age, as these two diseases are age-related.

Squinting in a child can be a symptom of later eye diseases unless treated. The so-called paediatric ophthalmology deals with the solution of eye problems in children.

Predicting the incidence of eye disease and dysfunction is difficult, as the individual factors depend on the age and history of the patients.

What treatments are differentiated?

Basically, you can choose between two forms of treatment. The temporary treatment of refractive error would be that with glasses or contact lenses. This allows most eye complaints to be treated or compensated for.

Should eyesight change or deteriorate, the remedy must also be adjusted. Glasses and contact lenses cannot correct certain eye diseases such as cataracts.

Eye problems such as cataracts, green cataracts or age-related macular degeneration require surgical intervention by means of eye surgery – such as cataract surgery or glaucoma surgery

A permanent solution can be achieved by eye laser or lens replacement. Here, the eye disease is treated by means of a laser and various intervention methods. Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, laser surgeries are now a trifle and involve little time and only a few risks. The most frequently chosen methods are:

What examination procedures and methods are available for diagnosis?

There are lots of methods for diagnosing different eye diseases. The most well-known method is the vision test. Anyone who has ever visited the optician knows this form of eye test.

Often, the slit lamp is also used to diagnose cataracts. This test can be used to find out whether the lens is cloudy or if the intraocular pressure is too high.

Other commonly used instruments of ophthalmology are:

Tonometry (intraocular pressure), perimetry (measurement of the visual field), ophthalmoscopy (retinal mirroring) and keratometry (measurement of the cornea).

What specialties are there in ophthalmology?

In total, there are four major specialties in ophthalmology:

  • Strabology
This field deals with the nature and effect of squint diseases, eye muscle balance disorders, forced head posture and nystagmus (eye tremors).
  • Neuroophthalmology
This field deals with the neurogenic causes of visual diseases. In addition, this is about how the eye can give signs of further diseases.
  • Refractive surgery
This involves the entire spectrum of operations on the eye, all of which can be attributed to internal medicine.
  • Chinese ophthalmology
Chinese ophthalmology deals with how the eye can be treated using Chinese medicine and exercise therapy. Special Chinese medicines as well as a specially developed movement therapy are used here.

The history of ophthalmology!

Ophthalmology is the study of the structure, function and diseases as well as functional disorders of the visual organ. In addition, it is about the appendix organs of the eye, the sense of sight and their medical treatments.

The first writings on ophthalmology date back to the cuneiform script of the Hammurapi more than 3600 years ago. According to these documents, if the eye treatment is successful, the doctor should receive ten shekels, if he fails both hands are chopped off.

Over time, knowledge of eye diseases has been steadily expanded. Already in the Middle Ages there were first treatments for cataracts. This “operation” was taken over by a so-called starter. The starter pricked the clouded lens in the patient’s eye.

In the middle of the 18th century, the first traditional initial stabbing took place. Nevertheless, the first really big steps in ophthalmology were not made until the beginning of the 19th century, when the microscope was invented. This apparatus made it possible for the first time to examine and understand the eye in more detail.

Frequently asked questions about ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is a medical specialty. An ophthalmologist has completed a medical degree and is authorized to diagnose, treat, prescribe medications and perform surgical procedures (e.g., laser eye surgery or cataract surgery). Optometry, on the other hand, is a non-medical craft that primarily deals with the determination of visual acuity and the adjustment of visual aids (glasses, contact lenses).

Experts recommend that annual or biennial check-ups be carried out from the age of 40. At this age, the risk of chronic eye diseases such as glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration (AMD) increases. In the case of family history or in the presence of diabetes, the preventive examination in ophthalmology should begin earlier.

Dry eyes (Sicca syndrome) are among the most common complaints in ophthalmology. The main causes are long work on the screen (reduced blinking frequency), age-related changes, environmental factors (air conditioning, dry air) or wearing contact lenses. Treatment ranges from regular use of artificial tears and special eye drops to physiotherapeutic or drug therapies that improve the fat and water production of the tear film.

The cataract, referred to in ophthalmology as cataract, is a clouding of the normally clear eye lens that almost always occurs due to age. This results in slowly progressive vision deterioration, increased sensitivity to glare, and an impression of seeing through a veil. The only effective treatment is the surgical replacement of the clouded lens with a clear artificial lens.
