What is cataract?

Cataract, also known as cataract, is an eye condition in which the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. As a result, vision gradually deteriorates.

Cataract surgery is the most effective method to eliminate haze and restore vision. After surgery, vision can be significantly improved.

Symptoms and Diagnosis Cataracts

The symptoms of cataracts develop gradually and can affect each eye differently. Typical signs are blurred vision, altered colour perception, glare sensitivity and poor night vision. At an advanced stage, cataracts can significantly impair vision.

An accurate diagnosis is made by an experienced ophthalmologist who performs a thorough examination of the eye. This includes vision tests, examination of the eye lens and assessment of other eye structures. Diagnosing cataracts is critical for planning appropriate treatment, such as cataract surgery.

Causes and risk factors for cataracts

Cataracts are caused by age-related changes in the lens of the eye, which lead to clouding. However, there are also other factors that increase the risk of developing cataracts, such as smoking, diabetes, genetic predisposition and long-term UV exposure.

A cataract surgery is the only effective treatment option to remove the clouded lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens. The cataract test is used to check eyesight and determine the severity of cataracts.

How is cataracts diagnosed by the doctor?

The cataract test begins with a medical history in which the ophthalmologist asks questions about your medical history and your symptoms. Various vision and eye tests are then carried out.

The cataract eye tests include various examinations to assess vision. This includes, above all, a visual acuity test to check how well you can recognize letters or numbers in different sizes.

In individual cases, for example, the so-called contrast test, in which the ability of the eye to perceive subtle differences in brightness is tested, can also be carried out.

These tests can also be carried out during an annual cataract screening check – especially if cataract surgery is under consideration.

Before the cataract test, you should inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, especially blood-thinning medications. It is also important to mention any allergies or pre-existing conditions.

You will be informed accordingly by trained personnel whether you should wear your glasses or contact lenses during the tests.

Treatment options for cataracts

The cataract treatment aims to remove the clouded eye lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens. The only way to treat cataracts is cataract surgery.

In this minimally invasive procedure, the cloudy lens is replaced by an artificial intraocular lens. The safest and most gentle method is surgery with the laser.

Grauer Star OP Ablauf im Detail

In ophthalmology Bányai, the innovative LENSAR laser is used, which performs the necessary cuts within a few seconds so that the old lens can be removed and the new lens can be inserted. The entire procedure takes between 15 and 20 minutes.

However, before the operation, the patient’s suitability for the procedure is checked. Not every cataract requires immediate surgery, especially if the visual impairment is not yet significant. The ophthalmologist will perform a thorough examination and discuss the best treatment option with the patient.
