Weil der Stadt is the fifth-largest town in the district of Böblingen, with a population of around 19,000. The town is best known as the birthplace of the natural philosopher and astronomer Johannes Kepler.
He discovered the laws governing the motion of the Sun and planets (Kepler’s laws). He also made optics a subject of scientific inquiry.
Kepler’s birthplace can still be admired in Weil der Stadt today. A monument in his honor is located in the town’s market square.
