Treat now through crosslinking!

Keratoconus, better known as conical deformation of the cornea, is a disease of the eye. It only affects the cornea of the eye and causes the incident light to strike the retina unfocused.
A blurred vision is the result. Glasses or contact lenses can provide a temporary remedy. The best solution to prevent progression would be to treat the eye using cross-linking.
The cross-linking procedure has been a treatment option for keratoconus for ten years. In order to stop the deterioration of the condition of the cornea at an early stage, the fibres of the cornea are more strongly cross-linked by a combination of riboflavin (vitamin B2) and UV light, thereby obtaining mechanical stability. For some years now, crosslinking has also been used in other medical fields (orthopaedics, ear, nose and throat, cardiac surgery).
The eye surgery is performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Finally, a therapeutic lens is placed on the cornea, which is removed by the doctor after a few days. The procedure has a success rate of almost 100%.
Eye drops are prescribed to relieve possible complaints such as burning or itching. After the procedure, eye drops containing cortisone must be used for six weeks. To avoid serious complications, a therapeutic contact lens is placed on the cornea as a kind of bandage
The patient will regain their previous vision shortly after the operation. Serious complications of this treatment for keratoconus have not been observed so far. Should a corneal transplant become necessary at any time, it can be performed at any time.
In cross-linking, a combination with a laser treatment is even possible.

In Germany, about one in 40,000 people is affected by keratoconus, including men twice as often as women.
This disease occurs between the onset of puberty and the age of 30, but there are also cases in which children or adults between the ages of 40 and 50 fall ill.
It is assumed that the development of the disease is due to a metabolic disorder and has genetic causes. However, the exact origin has not yet been researched. A side effect – and a risk factor – is intense eye rubbing over a long period of time, for example in the case of allergies.

Thanks to the corneal cross-linking treatment method, it has become possible to stop a course of the disease in keratoconus that has not yet been curbed by a relatively low-risk procedure and thus to spare the patient an elaborate keratoplasty (corneal transplantation).
