Monofocal lens and multifocal lensing – what’s the difference?
Monofocal lenses, also called “single power lenses”.
The monofocal lens usually only offers you sharp vision at a distance. The need for reading glasses therefore continues to exist.
Multifocal lenses, also known as “multi-focal lenses”.
The multifocal lens usually offers you absolute independence from glasses, as it provides a sharp image in different distance ranges thanks to a special design.
What happens with multifocal lenses?
As part of a multifocal lens operation, the body’s own lens is replaced by an artificial lens. In Germany alone, this procedure is performed more than 800,000 times a year, making it one of the most common surgeries ever.
Usually, a so-called monofocal lens is used, with which you can see sharply at long distances. You will still need glasses for near vision. This operation pays for your health insurance if there is a cataract.
The monofocal lens is considered the standard in the treatment of cataracts. If, on the other hand, you opt for modern multifocal lenses, you may be able to do without glasses altogether. Multifocal lenses provide a sharp image in different areas of the distance thanks to a special design.
If an intraocular lens with this additional benefit is desired or required, the patient must expect additional costs. We will be happy to advise you in a personal conversation about the costs of cataract surgery.

Monofocal lens implant as a solution for macular degeneration?
During surgery for macular degeneration, the ophthalmologist replaces the clouded natural lens with an artificial lens. In general, you have the choice between a multifocal lens or a monofocal lens.
Since a multifocal lens is not suitable for existing macular degeneration, only the monofocal lens is suitable as a lens implant.
In our practice, we use a lens specifically designed for patients with macular degeneration. This lens relieves the visual system and improves visual performance.
How does the lens implant work?
In combination with individual glasses, this lens implant enlarges the image. At the same time, it projects the retinal image onto the healthy parts of the macula.
Even with the progression of macular degeneration – which the lens cannot stop – the patient’s brain learns to select new areas of the retina and maintain visual performance.
What are the risks and side effects?
Possible risks and side effects include, for example, infections, inflammation or increased intraocular pressure. However, these side effects are minimized by compliance with hygiene regulations during and after the procedure.
Possible risks and side effects include, for example, infections, inflammation or increased intraocular pressure. However, these side effects are minimized by compliance with hygiene regulations during and after the procedure.
During an intervention by a practiced, experienced and capable surgeon, such risks are reduced to an absolute minimum.
