Das Augenlasern ist eine beliebte Alternative zur Brille, die schon vielen Menschen zu mehr Lebensqualität verholfen hat.

It is important for people to become increasingly aware of the signs of glaucoma. Glaucoma, also known as green star, is the second most common cause of blindness in the Western world – around 500,000 people are affected in Germany alone. However, the undeclared figure is estimated to be much higher due to. Regular and early prevention is the best way to rule out a disease or to start therapy in good time.

The term glaucoma covers a number of eye diseases that result in the loss of nerve fibres and, in extreme cases, lead to blindness. A disproportion of intraocular pressure and blood flow to the optic nerve is considered to be the cause. Conditions that lead to fluctuating or abnormal eye pressure increase the risk of developing glaucoma. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Increased intraocular pressure
  • Too high or too low blood pressure
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Ethnic Group
  • High shortsightedness or farsightedness
  • Old age

The risk of developing glaucoma increases with age

The most important factor for successful treatment in the event of a disease is an early, precise diagnosis. Since the risk of glaucoma increases with age, experts such as Doctor-medic Liliana Bányai recommend regular eye examinations from the age of 40. After the age of 50, the risk of getting sick doubles every ten years. Characteristic – and problematic – of the visual impairment in glaucoma is an impairment of peripheral vision.

However, the brain develops compensatory mechanisms that cause vision loss to go unnoticed for a long time. Almost two-thirds of people who suffer from cataracts are unaware of this. They often only realize that their vision has deteriorated after more than 90 percent of the nerve fibers have already been lost.

Irregularities in intraocular pressure can be controlled with medication in around 90 percent of patients. If this therapeutic approach is unsuccessful, there are also various surgical methods to counteract the cataract. Which method is suitable depends on the individual situation of the patient, but thanks to the constant technical development in the field of eye surgery, most interventions today are only minimally invasive and allow a rapid recovery.

Glaucoma implants to relieve intraocular pressure

One option offered by Doctor-medic Liliana Bányai is the placement of a XEN Gel stent, which lowers intraocular pressure. The implant is well received by the human body and does not cause inflammation. In contrast to other synthetic materials, its flexibility and compliance also reduces problems such as erosion or damage to the corneal cells.
