A veil that covers one’s eyesight and a milky-gray discoloration of the eyes are typical features of one of the world’s most common signs of aging. “The cataract is a real widespread disease and the most common cause of visual impairment worldwide,” explains Professor Dr. Thomas Kohnen, President of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG).

Thanks to longer life expectancies, this visual phenomenon affects almost everyone in old age today. In Germany alone, one in eight Germans suffers from cataract symptoms. Nevertheless, there are options for prevention, for example through a healthy diet.

A healthy lifestyle can counteract cataracts

The eye center Bányai informs: What applies to the rest of the body also applies to the eyes! Because those who rely on a healthy and balanced diet also do something good for their own eyes. Recent studies even prove that a healthy diet has an enormous influence on the time of opacification of the eye lens.

Always on the move

In addition to a healthy and varied diet, regular physical activity also supports natural vision. Active everyday life and regular exercise have been shown to have a positive effect on general health.

However, the fact that eye diseases can also be prevented in the course of this is a finding that has so far received little attention in public perception.

Severe obesity and nicotine consumption promote cataracts

The Bányai Laser Eye Centre repeatedly warns its patients against an unhealthy lifestyle. If the health conditions are not optimal, the likelihood of developing cataracts at a very early age also increases.

Above all, being very overweight, but also consuming nicotine, can accelerate the natural clouding of the eye lens. Other diseases, such as metabolic diseases such as diabetes, can also have a negative effect on the eyes. To protect the eyes, diabetics should therefore always pay attention to a good blood sugar control.

Genetic factors

Genetic factors can also be decisive for the expression of cataracts. Thus, the likelihood of developing opacity of the eye lens at a comparatively early stage increases if similar cases are already known in the direct relatives. So the causes of cataracts can be very different.

Cataract: Gentle procedure allows quick recovery

Slight eye clouding is normal from the age of 60. Surgery only needs to be carried out if there is a real impairment in everyday life. “Only when the opacity increases to such an extent that it severely impairs vision must cataracts be treated and the opacified lens replaced by an artificial lens,” confirms Thomas Kohnen, head of the Clinic for Ophthalmologists at the University Hospital Frankfurt.

For this purpose, the Bányai Eye Centre offers a blade-free implantation of artificial lenses using the modern LENSAR laser. Cataract surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia.

In southern Germany, the procedure used here is unique, as it can be carried out completely without a scalpel and allows a correspondingly rapid healing process. Blindness can thus be prevented in a gentle and painless way.

Das Augenlasern ist eine beliebte Alternative zur Brille, die schon vielen Menschen zu mehr Lebensqualität verholfen hat.
