The terms \u2018glaucoma<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018cataract\u2019 sound similar \u2013 yet these diagnoses refer to two completely different eye conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an ophthalmologist at B\u00e1nyai Augenheilkunde, with many years\u2019 experience, I would like to use this article to explain clearly what distinguishes the two, so that you can better understand the symptoms, causes and treatment options.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both conditions often occur from middle age onwards. However, their causes, symptoms and treatment approaches are fundamentally different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Differences between glaucoma and cataracts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Glaucoma and cataracts<\/a> are two common eye conditions that are often confused with one another \u2013 yet they differ significantly in their causes, progression, symptoms and treatment options.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst cataracts primarily affect the lens and can usually be treated effectively with surgery, glaucoma involves damage to the optic nerve which, if left untreated, can lead to blindness. Early detection is crucial in both cases \u2013 but the approaches to achieving this differ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glaucoma<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Glaucoma refers to a group of conditions in which the optic nerve \u2013 the \u2018data cable\u2019 between the eye and the brain \u2013 suffers permanent damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In most cases, increased intraocular pressure<\/a> is the main cause, as it impairs blood flow to the optic nerve. However, there are also forms such as normal-tension glaucoma<\/a>, in which nerve damage occurs despite normal pressure readings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The insidious nature of glaucoma is that it develops gradually, and a decline in vision often goes unnoticed for a long time. Symptoms of glaucoma, such as initial gaps in the visual field, are often not noticed \u2013 until vision loss has progressed significantly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If glaucoma is not detected and treated early, it can lead to irreversible blindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treatment aims to permanently lower intraocular pressure \u2013 usually through eye drops, laser treatments or surgical procedures such as cataract surgery. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cataracts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Cataracts affect the lens of the eye: it gradually becomes cloudy, meaning that incoming light is no longer clearly focused but is scattered instead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This clouding of the eye\u2019s lens leads to blurred vision, increased sensitivity to glare (e.g. when driving at night) and an overall clouded view \u2013 comparable to a veil over the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most common cause is the natural ageing process, but factors such as excessive UV exposure, diabetes, smoking or long-term use of cortisone can also contribute to lens opacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike glaucoma, cataracts can be treated effectively: in a standardised procedure, the clouded lens is replaced with an artificial, clear lens \u2013 with a very good chance of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A closer look at the causes reveals that glaucoma and cataracts arise for very different reasons \u2013 and carry different risks. Understanding these differences helps not only with early detection but also with targeted prevention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Causes of glaucoma<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The most common cause of glaucoma is a disruption in the drainage of aqueous humour \u2013 the fluid that is constantly being produced and drained within the eye. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If an imbalance occurs, intraocular pressure rises. This pressure can affect the optic nerve and cause permanent damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, elevated intraocular pressure alone does not account for all forms of glaucoma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional factors play a role, particularly in so-called normal-tension glaucoma:<\/p>\n\n\n
